Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

The Canadian Opera Company (COC) is one of the premier arts organizations in Canada. The largest producer of opera in Canada, and one of the largest in North America, the COC enjoys a loyal audience support-base and one of the highest subscription rates in North America. Under the leadership of General Director Alexander Neef and Music Director Johannes Debus, the COC is increasingly capturing the opera world’s attention, including attracting the world’s foremost Canadian and international artists. The COC performs in its own opera house, the Fours Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, hailed internationally as one of the finest in the world.

COC has partnered with Farber to source and hire a CFO to join their executive team. The CFO will provide strategic and operational leadership from the finance perspective for regular operations and as the COC embarks on the next phase of their strategic plan. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the CFO acts as an Officer of the company and works closely with members of the Executive management team and various Board sub-committees as well as being a proactive resource to all operating departments.

Role responsibilities:
  • Provide financial stewardship to the organization, overseeing finance, accounting, treasury, financial planning, operating and capital budgets and monitoring the fund manager.
  • Develop and coach team members, supporting their growth
  • Lead continuous improvements to Finance policies, processes and initiatives that impact the financial performance and future direction of the COC
  • Collaborate with all department leaders as a business partner, including Facilities as new and current development projects are underway
  • In conjunction with the Executive leadership team, provide appropriate and transparent financial information to the Board of Directors and the various sub-committees
  • Develop budgets and forecasts, aligned with the long-range financial goals; effectively manage the cash-flow and banking relationships
  • Oversee the IT department providing guidance, support and advice for IT initiatives


In order to be considered for this role, you will possess the following qualifications:
  • A passion for the performing arts
  • CPA designation required together with a university degree or equivalent education and experience in a field related to business, commerce or accounting
  • 10+ years of recent, relevant and progressive finance leadership experience, bringing business and operations expertise to the table
  • Proven experience collaborating with Senior Management and Board of Directors
  • Reporting for donations, endowments, government grants and sponsorships developed through working with charitable organizations an asset
  • Excellent communication skills, a relentless curiosity to seek continuous improvements, high level of integrity, accountability and urgency as well as a strong coach and leader
  • Leadership of IT and facilities a definite asset
